Now in its 11th year, Blas na hEireann, The Irish Food Awards is the biggest competition for quality Irish produce on the island of Ireland. Over 2500 products were entered into the 2018 competition to win Gold, Silver and Bronze Awards in over 100 food and drink categories as well as key awards such as Supreme Champion and Best Artisan Producer.
The Irish Food Awards recognises and rewards the very best tasting Irish food and drink products, and the passionate, driven producers who make it. All Irish companies are invited to submit products that are commercially available. These products are then tasted by panels of selected judges, in two tranches, resulting in the winning products being awarded Gold, Silver and Bronze medals in each category.
The Blas awards are the biggest blind tasting of produce in the country, and the criteria on which the product is judged as well as the judging system itself, which was developed by Blas na hEireann with the Food Sciences Department of UCC, is now recognised as an international industry standard.
In 2017 there were over 2500 entries from food producers representing every county on the island.
A little more about Blas na hEireann – The Irish Food Awards
This is a year round campaign which culminates in the events on the first weekend of October every year and continues with the promotion of the finalists and winners after the awards have been announced right throughout the year.
Background: 2018 is the 11th year of Blas na hEireann, The Irish Food Awards. Since their inception, the awards have grown hugely year on year both in terms of size and stature and are now recognised as the ultimate benchmark for quality. A trusted accreditation and mark of Irish quality Research has shown that the Blas accreditation has the highest recognition amongst Irish consumers and using the award logo on packs encourages shoppers to buy these products. It is their guarantee of Irish top quality. The judges come from a range of food backgrounds; they are chefs, restaurateurs, academics, journalists, authors, food champions, caterers and enthusiastic home cooks. Retailers with a vested interest or producers who have entered the competition are never involved in the judging process.
